It was a chilly and grey day last week when I went to the Douglas County Courthouse in Omaha to do some further digging -- a perfect reflection for what I’d find as it happened. The clerk was kind enough to fax me some of the records I was looking for so that I didn’t have to hang around all day while they dug them out. That turned out to be a good thing, because I don’t think I could have managed to keep my composure had I been in public.
Most of the records I sought had to do with John, and we’ll look at those very soon. But ever since chronicling the sad history of the McCaul family -- one replete with drug and alcohol abuse, violence, gangs, murders, guns, child abuse and neglect -- the story behind John McCaul Sr’s sexual assault arrest from 1998 has been nagging at me. While the court docket shows the charge was ultimately dismissed, it didn't include original charging document. So since I was already at the courthouse I figured I might as well dig it up while I was there.
There are times when you wish you could “unsee” something. Something so disturbing, so unsettling that you wish you could erase its knowledge from your memory. Something so upsetting that the world seems a little less beautiful now that you know of it. That’s the best way I can think of to describe what I found.
In 1998 John McCaul Sr. -- John’s father and Sonya’s biological grandfather -- was accused of raping and sexually molesting a 6-year-old girl. His own granddaughter, no less.
A copy from part of the charging affidavit of the officer who investigated the crime is linked here, but beware it is very graphic. I’m including only a portion of the affidavit in order to protect the privacy of the victim, and I’ve redacted her address. But there’s more than enough here to grasp the hideousness of what she reported. [UPDATE: The full affidavit and other charging documents are here (redacted). Since some have a hard time believing anything bad about their saintly family.]
Please John Jr., please -- please assure us that Sonya is never, ever in the presence of her grandfather. Not even for the briefest, teeniest of moments. Whatever else may be happening to her, she must be protected from that.
